Common Expressions: Skeletal

Expressions Definition
Skeletal animation A technique in computer animation, particularly the animation of vertebrates, where a character is represented in two parts: a surface representation used to draw the character (called the skin) and a hierarchical set of bones used for animation only (called the skeleton). (references)
Skeletal fluorosis Skeletal fluorosis is an excessive accumulation of fluoride in bone associated with increased bone density and outgrowths (exostoses). Hypothyroidism may be present. Water fluoridation and other fluoride exposure sources uses may be counter-indicated in severe cases. (references)
Skeletal formula A skeletal formula is a three-dimensional model of the molecule that demonstrates the molecular shape, including bond angles. It does not necessarily display the chemical elements within a molecule. These are drawn by using a line for each bond. Carbon atoms are understood to exist at each bend, conjunction, or end of a line. Hydrogen atoms are understood to be anywhere that they are required to give any atom the appropriate number of covalent bonds. All other elements are specifically noted in the appropriate place. Some common groups, such as benzene rings, have their own shorthand forms. (references)
Skeletal frame The internal supporting structure that gives an artifact its shape. Source: Wordnet 3.0 Copyright © 2006 by Princeton University. All rights reserved.
Skeletal muscle A muscle that is connected at either or both ends to a bone and so move parts of the skeleton; a muscle that is characterized by transverse stripes. Source: Wordnet 3.0 Copyright © 2006 by Princeton University. All rights reserved.
Skeletal muscle Skeletal muscle is a type of striated muscle, attached to the skeleton. Skeletal muscles are used to facilitate movement, by applying force to bones and joints; via contraction. They generally contract voluntarily (via nerve stimulation), although they can contract involuntarily. (references)
Skeletal structure Any structure created by the skeleton of an organism. Source: Wordnet 3.0 Copyright © 2006 by Princeton University. All rights reserved.
Skeletal survey A skeletal survey is a series of X-rays of all the bones in the body, or at least the axial skeleton and the large cortical bones. A very common use is the diagnosis of multiple myeloma, where tumour deposits appear as "punched-out" lesions. (references)
Skeletal system The hard structure (bones and cartilages) that provides a frame for the body of an animal. Source: Wordnet 3.0 Copyright © 2006 by Princeton University. All rights reserved.

Specialty Expressions: Skeletal

Expressions Domain Definition
Hyperostosis, Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Health A disease of elderly men characterized by large osteophytes that bridge vertebrae and ossification of ligaments and tendon insertions. (references)
Skeletal crystal Mining Crystals that develop under conditions of rapid growth and high degrees of supersaturation so that atoms or ions are added more rapidly to edges and corners of growing crystals, resulting in branched "dendrites" or hollow stepped depressions, "hoppers." Ice on windowpanes (frost) and pyrolusite on agate (moss agate) are dendrites; halite and gold may form hoppercrystals. Cf: dendrite; hopper crystal. (references)
Skeletal muscle Aerospace Skeletal muscles are muscles that connect bones together. (references)
Skeletal Muscle Ventricle Health Autologous skeletal muscle that is wrapped around the heart and electrically stimulated in order to provide mechanical heart assistance. The latissimus dorsi muscle is commonly used to form this ventricle that functions to independently augment cardiac performance by pumping in series with the heart. (references)
Skeletal musculature Medicine The muscles which are connected to the skeleton, and serve to move the various parts of it. Source: European Union. (references)
Skeletal soil Geography An azonal soil having no clearly expressed soil morphology and consisting of a freshly and imperfectly weathered mass of rock fragments. Source: European Union. (references)
Skeletal system Aerospace The skeletal system is the system of interconnecting bones which form the rigid framework of the human body. The skeletal system not only provides the body with form, but also protects and supports its soft organs and tissues. It also provides attachments for muscles and serves as a system of levers essential for locomotion. (references)
Skeletal torso harness Labor A personal harness donned by the occupant before entering the aircraft and connected to the parachute liftwebs and seat lap straps after entry. Source: European Union. (references)
