| Hand Grenade Oil Lamps | Hand Grenade Oil lamps were designed in 1997 by a New York born Dutch Designer, Piet Houtenbos. As a simple oil lamp they can be filled with oil and burned for about 24 continuous hours providing light from a uniquely shaped chunk of metal. Sold around the United States and briefly in Amsterdam these oil lamps are made from actual U.S. Army Surplus grenades and retrofitted to become simple, safe, illuminating oil lamps. These lamps quickly became perhaps the most controversial oil lamps ever produced. Top tiers of the design world have praised their inventiveness while others brought on harsher political criticisms. | Compressed-air-driven lamps | Mining | These lamps are self-contained units and comprise a strong alloy casing within which are a compressed-air turbine and a small alternating-current generator with stationary windings and revolving field magnets. The air enters the casing at one side, passes through a filter and then through a reducing valve that maintains a constant pressure of 40 psi (276 kPa) on the turbine blades. The air escaping from the turbine is used to scavenge the inside of the lamp and remove any combustible gases that might have entered when the lamp was not in use. It is finally discharged through a series of holes of such a size that the pressure inside the lamp casing is 2 to 3 psi (14 to 21 kPa) above atmospheric. Should this pressure be lost due to the lamp glass being broken, the light is extinguished automatically by a spring-loaded diaphragm, which short-circuits the generator unless held open by the excess pressure. Also called air turbolamp. (references) | |

| Fluorescent lamps | Energy | 1: A light source consisting of a tube filled with argon, along with krypton or other inert gas. When electrical current is applied, the resulting arc emits ultraviolet radiation that excites the phosphors inside the lamp wall, causing them to radiate visible light. (references) | |
| 2: Fluorescent lamps produce light by passing electricity through a gas, causing it to glow. The gas produces ultraviolet light; a phosphor coating on the inside of the lamp absorbs the ultraviolet light and produces visible light. Fluorescent lamps produce much less heat than incandescent lamps and are more energy efficient. Linear fluorescent lamps are used in long narrow fixtures designed for such lamps. Compact fluorescent light bulbs have been designed to replace incandescent light bulbs in table lamps, floodlights, and other fixtures. To learn more about lighting, see the Buying Lighting section of the Building Technologies Program Web site, or see the fact sheet, "Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL's), prepared by the U.S. Department of Energy.
