Date "Hypoxia" was first used in popular English literature: sometime before 1944. (references)

Specialty Definition: Hypoxia

Domain Definition
Administration A condition in which natural waters have a low concentration of dissolved oxygen (about 2 milligrams per liter as compared with a normal level of 8 to 10 milligrams per liter). Most game and commercial species of fish avoid waters that are Hypoxic. (references)
Aerospace 1: An insufficient supply of oxygen in the bloodstream that results in dizziness, unconsciousness and ultimately death. (references)
2: Oxygen want or deficiency; any state wherein a physiologically inadequate amount of oxygen is available to, or utilized by, tissue without respect to cause or degree. Compare anoxia. (references)
Agriculture A low oxygen condition in the water that may occur where a nutrient-laden free-flowing body of water (like a river) enters a lake or ocean. The high nutrient content promotes rapid growth of plankton/phytoplankton that subsequently die and, in the process, consume large amounts of oxygen. (references)
Environment 1: Depletion of dissolved oxygen in an aquatic system. (references)
2: A condition in which the dissolved oxygen in a parcel of water is low enough to have biological effects. Fish and other creatures can survive short periods of hypoxia, but long periods of reduced oxygen can dramatically alter the ecosystem. EPA defines hypoxic water as water with oxygen concentrations of 2 milligrams per liter or less. (references)
Geology 1) A medical condition in which the blood is carrying abnormally low levels of oxygen. 2) A condition in which an organism is living in an environment that doesn't contain enough oxygen to keep it alive. (references)
Health 1: A state in which there is oxygen deficiency. (references)
2: Reduction of oxygen supply to tissue below physiological levels despite adequate perfusion of the tissue by blood. (references)
Public Administration The diminution, but not total absence, of oxygen in the cells and tissues of the body, due to poor ventilation or loss of blood. A greater amount of oxygen loss is anoxia, and total loss is asphyxia. Source: European Union. (references)
Religion A condition in which there is a decrease in the oxygen supply to a tissue. In cancer treatment, the level of hypoxia in a tumor may help predict the response of the tumor to the treatment. (references)

Common Expressions: Hypoxia

Expressions Definition
Anemic hypoxia Hypoxia resulting from a decreased concentration of hemoglobin. Source: Wordnet 3.0 Copyright © 2006 by Princeton University. All rights reserved.
Anemic hypoxia Anemic hypoxia occurs when there is sufficient oxygen in the lungs, but the blood has lost some of its capacity to carry it. This can occur from a lack of blood cells, such as exists if you suffer from anemia or after donating blood. It also exists when the cells do not combine at the normal rate with oxygen, as occurs in carbon monoxide poisoning, the most common cause of anemic hypoxia in aviation. (references)
Cerebral hypoxia Cerebral hypoxia refers to a condition in which there is a decrease of oxygen supply to the brain even though there is adequate blood flow. Drowning, strangling, choking, suffocation, cardiac arrest, head trauma, carbon monoxide poisoning, and complications of general anesthesia can create conditions that can lead to cerebral hypoxia. Symptoms of mild cerebral hypoxia include inattentiveness, poor judgment, memory loss, and a decrease in motor coordination. Brain cells are extremely sensitive to oxygen deprivation and can begin to die within five minutes after oxygen supply has been cut off. When hypoxia lasts for longer periods of time, it can cause coma, seizures, and even brain death. In brain death, basic life functions such as breathing, blood pressure, and cardiac function are preserved, but there is no consciousness or response to the world around. (references)
Histotoxic hypoxia Histotoxic hypoxia is the inability of cells to take up or utilize oxygen from the bloodstream, despite physiologically normal delivery of oxygen to such cells and tissues. Histotoxic hypoxia results from tissue poisoning, such as that caused by alcohol, narcotics, cyanide (which acts by inhibiting cytochrome oxidase), and certain other poisons. (references)
Hypoxia inducible factors Hypoxia inducible factors (HIFs) are transcription factors that respond to changes in available oxygen in the cellular environment, specifically to decreases in oxygen, or hypoxia. Many organisms express the highly conserved transcriptional complex HIF-1, which is a heterodimer composed of an alpha and beta subunit, the latter being a constitutively expressed aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator (ARNT). HIF-1 belongs to the PAS subfamily of the basic-helix-loop-helix (bHLH) family of transcription factors. The alpha subunit of HIF-1 is a target for prolyl hydroxylation by HIF prolyl-hydroxylase, which makes HIF-1 alpha a target for degradation by the E3 ubiquitin ligase complex. This only occurs in normoxic conditions. In hypoxic conditions, HIF prolyl-hydroxylase is inhibited since it utilizes oxygen as a cosubstrate. Hypoxia also results in a build up of succinate, due to inhibition of the electron transport chain in the mitochondria. The build up of succinate further inhibits HIF prolyl-hydroxylase action since it is an end product of HIF hydoxylation. (references)
Hypoxic hypoxia Hypoxia resulting from defective oxygenation of the blood in the lungs. Source: Wordnet 3.0 Copyright © 2006 by Princeton University. All rights reserved.
Hypoxic hypoxia Hypoxic hypoxia is hypoxia resulting from a defective mechanism of oxygenation in the lungs; may be caused by a low tension of oxygen, abnormal pulmonary function or respiratory obstruction, or a right-to-left shunt in the heart. (references)
Ischemic hypoxia Hypoxia resulting from slow peripheral circulation (such as follows congestive cardiac failure). Source: Wordnet 3.0 Copyright © 2006 by Princeton University. All rights reserved.
Stagnant hypoxia Hypoxia resulting from slow peripheral circulation (such as follows congestive cardiac failure). Source: Wordnet 3.0 Copyright © 2006 by Princeton University. All rights reserved.
Tumor hypoxia Tumor hypoxia is the situation where tumor cells have been deprived of oxygen. They are relevant in the study of radiation therapy as they can be made more susceptible to treatment by increasing the amount of oxygen in them. Study of tumors in such conditions was pioneered by Dr L. H. Gray. (references)

Extended Definition: Hypoxia

Hypoxia

Hypoxia literally means "a deficiency in oxygen." It can refer to:

  • Hypoxia (medical), a shortage of oxygen in the body. Hypoxaemia is the reduction of oxygen specifically in the blood; anoxia is when there is no oxygen available at all.
    • Environmental hypoxia, a condition in high altitudes such as mountains where the reduced partial pressure of oxygen available leads to hypoxia.
    • Ischemia, a restriction in blood supply (and therefore oxygen supply) to an organ or section of the body, generally due to constriction or blocking of blood vessels.
  • Hypoxia (environmental) or oxygen depletion, a reduced concentration of dissolved oxygen in a water body leading to stress and death in aquatic organisms.
    • Dead zone (ecology), or hypoxic zones, hypoxic areas in the world's oceans.
    • Anoxic sea water, a condition of abnormally low levels of oxygen in the sea.
    • Oxygen minimum zone, the depth in the sea at which the dissolved oxygen level is lowest, or most hypoxic.

In popular culture

  • Hypoxia is a song on the album Spheres 2 by Delerium
  • Hypoxia is a death metal band in Santa Rosa, California

See also

  • Oxygen saturation, a relative measure of the oxygen dissolved or carried in a medium; a measure of the severity of hypoxic conditions.
  • Oxygen toxicity (hyperoxia), the opposite condition of hypoxia, an excess of oxygen in body tissues.
  • Time of Useful Consciousness, a measure of how quickly hypoxia renders a person incapable of normal thought.
  • Respiratory Acidosis, a decrease in physiological pH due to hypoventilation or decrease in gas exchange by alveoli
