| Atrial fibrillation | Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is a cardiac arrhythmia (an abnormality of heart rate or rhythm) originating in the atria. Abnormal electrical impulses in the atria cause the ventricles to contract erratically. AF is the most common cardiac arrhythmia. If rapid, it may compromise blood flow and cause fainting, orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure on standing up) or low blood pressure. In addition, it predisposes to thrombosis and embolism to the brain, being a prime risk factor for stroke, the most feared complication of atrial fibrillation. (references) | ||
| Atrial flutter | Atrial flutter is a rhythmic, fast rhythm that occurs in the atria of the heart. This rhythm occurs most often in individuals with organic heart disease (ie: pericarditis, coronary artery disease, and cardiomyopathy). (references) | ||
| Atrial natriuretic factor | Atrial natriuretic factor (ANF), atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) or atriopeptin, is a peptide hormone involved in the homeostatic control of body water and sodium. (references) | ||
| Atrial septal defect | An abnormal opening between the left and right atria of the heart. Source: Wordnet 3.0 Copyright © 2006 by Princeton University. All rights reserved. | ||
| Atrial septal defect | Atrial septal defects (ASD) are a group of congenital heart diseases that involve the interatrial septum of the heart. The inter-atrial septum is the tissue that separates the right and left atria from each other. Without this septum, or if there is a defect in this septum, it is possible for blood to travel from the left side of the heart to the right side of the heart, or the other way around, resulting in mixing of arterial and venous blood. (references) | ||
| Premature atrial contraction | Premature atrial contractions (PACs) are a type of premature heart beat or irregular heart beat or arrhythmia which start in the upper two chambers of the heart, or atria. These aren't serious, and they frequently go away on their own. (references) | ||

| Atrial fibrillation | Geology | Rapid irregular twitchings of the wall of the atrium (chamber) of the heart. (references) | |
| Atrial Fibrillation | Health | Disorder of cardiac rhythm characterized by rapid, irregular atrial impulses and ineffective atrial contractions. (references) | |
| Atrial fibrillation | Medicine | Arrhythmia characterized by totally disorganized atrial depolarizations without effective atrial contraction. Electrical activity of the atrium can be detected electrocardiographically as small irregular baseline undulations of variable amplitude and morphology, called f waves, at a rate of 350 to 600 beats/min. Source: European Union. (references) | |
| Atrial Flutter | Health | Rapid, irregular atrial contractions due to an abnormality of atrial excitation. (references) | |
| Atrial flutter | Medicine | Arrhythmia associated with an atrial rate of about 300 beats/min. In untreated patients the ventricular rate is half the atrial rate, i. e. , 150 beats/min. A significant slower ventricular rate suggests abnormal AV conduction. Source: European Union. (references) | |
| Atrial Function, Right | Health | The hemodynamic and electrophysiological action of the right atrium. (references) | |
| Atrial inhibited | Medicine | Pacing mode that can be considered the atrial counterpart of VVI pacing. It incorporates the same timing cycles, with the obvious difference that pacing and sensing occur from the atrium and pacemaker output is inhibited by a sensed atrial event [VE1]. Source: European Union. (references) | |
| Atrial Natriuretic Factor | Health | A potent natriuretic and vasodilatory peptide or mixture of different-sized low molecular weight peptides derived from a common precursor and secreted by the heart atria. All these peptides share a sequence of about 20 amino acids. (references) | |
| Atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) | Aerospace | Atrial natriuretic factor is a hormone-like substance present in the two atrial walls of the heart (especially numerous in the right atria). The ANF factor can cause a three to ten times increase in renal (kidney) excretion of sodium when it is fully released into the circulating blood. Consequent to the loss of sodium is a slight decrease in the extracellular fluid volume and blood volume. Although its exact mechanism of action is unclear, it is believed that the ANF plays a role in the regulation of blood volume. (references) | |
| Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) | Geology | This cardiac hormone (28 amino acid residues) regulates salt and water balance in body fluids and blood pressure; it has potential as a medication to treat heart and kidney failure and the buildup of excess fluid in tissue. (references) | |
| Atrial septum | Medicine | The partition between the right and left atria of the heart. Source: European Union. (references) | |
| Atrial standstill | Medicine | Cessation of contraction of the atria of the heart. Source: European Union. (references) | |
| Atrial triggered | Medicine | Pacemaker that releases an output pulse into the atrium every time a native event is sensed. Source: European Union. (references) | |
| Heart Septal Defects, Atrial | Health | Defects in the septum between the atria of the heart, due to failure of fusion between either the septum secundum or the septum primum and the endocardial cushions. (references) | |
| Internodal atrial pathways | Medicine | Groups of cardiac cells located between the sinus and the AV node that make up three pathways:the anterior internodal pathway, the anterior interatrial band, called Bachmann's bundle, and the posterior internodal tract. They are best referred to as internodal atrial myocardium, not tracts, because they do not appear to be histologically discrete specialized tracts, only plain atrial myocardium [VE1]. Source: European Union. (references) | |
| Receptors, Atrial Natriuretic Factor | Health | Cell surface proteins that bind atrial natriuretic factor with high affinity and trigger intracellular changes influencing the behavior of cells. (references) | |
| Tachycardia, Ectopic Atrial | Health | A tachycardia originating in the atrial myocardium and characterized by rates between 135 and 175 beats per minute. (references) | |
