Geological | In surveying, a reference system for computing or correlating the results of surveys. There are two principal types of datums: vertical and horizontal. A vertical datum is a level surface to which heights are referred. In the United States, the generally adopted vertical datum for leveling operations is the national geodetic vertical datums of 1929 (differing slightly from mean sea level). The horizontal datum, used as a reference for position, is defined by: the latitude and longitude of an initial point, the direction of a line between this point and a specified second point, and two dimensions which define the spheroid. In the United States, the initial point for the horizontal datum is located at Meades Ranch in Kansas. (references) |

Any numerical or geometric quantity or value that serves as a base or reference for other quantities or values; any fixed or assumed position or element (such as a point, line, or surface) in relation to which others are determined, such as a level surface to which depths or heights are referred in leveling. Pl: datums; the plural data is used for a group of statistical or inclusive references, such as geographic data for a list oflatitudes and longitudes. See also:datum plane; geoid. (references) |
Tips from 1870 | Usage: Datum, Phenomenon. Datum, erratum, candelabrum, and memorandum form their plurals by changing um to a; as, data, errata, etc. The last two also take the English plurals, memorandums, candelabrums. The plural of phenomenon and criterion are phenomena, criteria, although criterions is sometimes employed. The plural forms, data, strata, and phenomena, are so much more frequently used than their singular forms, datum, stratum, and phenomenon, that some writers have slipped into the habit of using the plurals with a singular meaning; as, "The aurora borealis is a very strange phenomena." "Our data is insufficient to establish a theory." "The strata is broken and irregular." Source: Slips of Speech. |

For instance, sea-level is commonly used as a datum against which height (or depth) of topographic features can be measured. Whilst the use of sea-level as a datum is useful for geologically recent topographic features, it should be remembered that sea-level has not stayed constant throughout geological time (see Vail-curve).
On maps, heights and depths will typically be given in height above datum or depth below datum. Ordnance Survey maps define the Ordnance Survey Datum or OSD which is usually sea-level, but should be checked in the map legend.
