Kazakhstan

Moody's Investors Service raised Kazakhstan's foreign currency ceiling for bonds and notes to Ba2 from B1 and its foreign currency deposit rating from B1 to Ba3, and the rating for long-term local currency government securities from B1 to Ba1 In June 2001. Moody's gave all of Kazakhstan's new ratings an outlook of "positive." Standard & Poor (S&P) raised the country's long-term foreign currency credit rating in May 2001 from BB- to BB and its long-term domestic currency credit rating from BB to BB+. S&P left its foreign and domestic currency short-term credit ratings unchanged at B.
