Aim

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

In demonology Aim is a Great Duke of Hell, very strong, and rules over twenty-six legions of demons. He sets cities, castles and great places on fire, makes men witty in all ways, and gives true answers concerning private matters.

He is depicted as a man (handsome to some sources), but with three heads, one of a serpent, the second of a man (to some authors with two stars on his forehead), and the third of a cat to most authors, although some say of a calf, riding a viper, and carrying in his hand a lit firebrand with which he sets the requested things on fire.

Other spellings: Aym, Haborym.

See also The Lesser Key of Solomon, Ars Goetia.

AIM is the commonly abbreviated form for AOL Instant Messenger, AOL's instant messaging solution.

AIM is also a well known acronym for the London Alternative Investment Market.

In the universe of Marvel Comics, AIM stands for Advanced Idea Mechanics, an organization of scientists and technicians that supplies high-tech armament to terrorists and super-villains. They have battled Captain America, Iron Man, and Nick Fury, among others.

AIM alliance

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

AIM was an alliance formed in 1991 between Apple Computer, IBM and Motorola to create a new computing standard based on the PowerPC architecture.

The stated goal of the alliance was to challenge the dominant Wintel computing platform with a new computer design and a next-generation operating system. It was thought that the CISC processors from Intel were an evolutionary dead-end in microprocessor design, and that since RISC was the future, the next few years were a period of great opportunity.

The CPU was the PowerPC, a single-chip version of IBM's POWER CPU. Both IBM and Motorola would manufacture PowerPC chips for this new platform.

The computer architecture based was called PReP (for PowerPC Reference Platform), and later named CHRP (for Common Hardware Reference Platform). PReP was in fact a barely-modified version of IBM's existing RS/6000 platform, changed only to support the new bus style of the PowerPC.

Apple and IBM created two new companies called Taligent and Kaleida as part of the alliance. Taligent was formed from a core team of Apple software engineers to create a next-generation operating system, code-named "Pink", to run on the platform. Kaleida was to create an object-oriented, cross-platform multimedia scripting language which would enable developers to create entirely new kinds of applications that would harness the power of the platform.

Efforts on the part of Motorola and IBM to popularize PReP/CHRP failed when Apple, IBM, and Taligent all failed to provide an operating system that could run on it. Although the platform was eventually supported by several Unix flavours as well as Windows NT, these operating systems generally ran just as well on Intel-based hardware so there was little reason to use the PReP systems.

Kaleida folded in 1995. Taligent folded in 1998. Some CHRP machines shipped in 1997 and 1998 to no fanfare. The PowerPC program was the one success that came out of the AIM alliance; Apple started using PowerPC chips in their Macintosh line starting in 1994, and they continue to find success in the embedded market as well. In 2003, after disappointing performance increases from Motorola, Apple turned to IBM to provide chips for it's new G5 desktop computers.

In November 2003, a cluster of 1100 Apple G5 computers using 2 IBM PPC970 each has won the third rank in the Top500 of world's fastest supercomputers.

AOL Instant Messenger

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

The AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) is a free instant messaging computer program, published by AOL, which uses the OSCAR instant messaging protocol and the TOC protocol. The most recent software version is AIM 5.2, released in June of 2003. AOL has described this technology as a means of "immediate cross-Internet communication". [1]

It allows users to communicate instantly through text to their "buddies" around the world, provided they have the AIM software. AIM has 100 million users. Advocates claim that it's easy to locate these users by visiting chatrooms that AOL has set up solely for those purposes. Chat topics range from *NSYNC to current affairs. AOL also has a member directory where AIM users can locate others online who share their interests.

Since version 2.0, AIM has included person-to-person text messaging, chatroom messaging, and the ability to share files peer-to-peer with your buddies. Unlike Napster, and other peer-to-peer software, there is no directory of files, you only transfer files to one another as one would in an email. Somewhere in the 4.x series, the AIM client for Microsoft Windows added the ability to play games against one another. Recent (4.3 and later) versions of the client software store your contact information on AOL's servers, so you can talk to up to 200 of your buddies from any computer with Internet access. Stand-alone official AIM client software is available for free (but is not free software in the GNU sense) for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Windows CE, and Palm OS. However, some users stay on the 3.0 series because the software license agreement for 4.0 and later clients includes a clause prohibiting the user from ever using a third-party client program.

There is also a client called AIM Express implemented as an applet for the Java platform that runs in your web browser. AIM Express does not have all the features of stand-alone AIM clients (such as file transfer, buddy icons, and away messages), but it still allows the basic functions of person-to-person text messaging.

The standard protocol that AIM clients use to communicate is called OSCAR. AIM Express uses another protocol called TOC. TOC has also been made available to the public, in an attempt to throw a bone to third-party client developers and lure them away from OSCAR. This scheme has not been entirely successful. Because AOL wants to be able to serve advertisements to users, AOL has continually changed the details of the OSCAR protocol to keep third-party clients such as Trillian from working properly. This has resulted in a cat-and-mouse game between AOL and the client developers.

Users: ~60 million Login servers: login.oscar.aol.com, toc.oscar.aol.com and login.icq.com Used ports: tcp at any port you choose in the settings (default is 5190), for the IM images the software uses port 4443 (?) Used protocol: OSCAR, TOC Supports proxy: http, https, socks 4 and socks 5 Online Version: http://toc.oscar.aol.com/ (The old QuickBuddy, port 80) and http://toc.oscar.aol.com/aimexpress/index.html (the newer AIM Express, port 80) or http://www.odigo.org/features/express.html (The Odigo client online, supports all 4 services)

Additional Resources

To download AIM, or find out more information go to: 545 Studios (which is not affilliated with AOL) has made a 3rd party program called AIMutation ($3.95 to purchase) that overlays additional features atop AIM (version 5 or later) without consuming gobs of resources. More information at http://www.aimutation.com/

JDennis (which is not affilliated with AOL) has made a 3rd party program called deadAIM ($4.99 to purchase) that modifies AIM to include many new features. More information is available at http://www.jdennis.net/

MyAIM, a free plugin for AIM 4.8, transparently adds many new features most notably transparency, cloning, and chat logging. Future versions of MyAIM are planned to support AIM versions 5 and later. More information at http://home.rochester.rr.com/artcfox/MyIM/index.html

To log in to AIM through AIM Express, go to [http://www.aim.com/get_aim/express/aim_expr.adp?aolp= AIM.com

Another version of AIM Express can be found at AOL.com

Alternate clients

While there are a variety of alternate single protocol clients one should also consider using a multi-protocol client if one need use AOL instant messenger simultaneously with another chat service. Of these doubtlessly the most popular is miranda im for windows OSes and gaim for linux OSes. Both are open source software packages.
