Athens Township is a township located in Bradford County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 5,058.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 116.7 km² (45.1 mi²). 113.4 km² (43.8 mi²) of it is land and 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.86% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,058 people, 2,002 households, and 1,449 families residing in the township. The population density is 44.6/km² (115.5/mi²). There are 2,189 housing units at an average density of 19.3/km² (50.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 96.90% White, 0.40% African American, 0.16% Native American, 1.58% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,002 households out of which 33.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.7% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% are non-families. 23.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.94. In the township the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.5 males.
