Americus is a city located in Sumter County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 17,013. The city is the county seat of Sumter County6.

Geography


Americus is located at 32°4'31" North, 84°13'36" West (32.075221, -84.226602)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 27.7 km² (10.7 mi²). 27.1 km² (10.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.87% water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 17,013 people, 6,374 households, and 4,149 families residing in the city. The population density is 626.8/km² (1,623.1/mi²). There are 7,053 housing units at an average density of 259.8/km² (672.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 39.05% White, 58.26% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 2.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,374 households out of which 32.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.2% are married couples living together, 27.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% are non-families. 29.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.14. In the city the population is spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 14.1% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 79.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 70.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $26,808, and the median income for a family is $32,132. Males have a median income of $27,055 versus $20,169 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,168. 27.7% of the population and 23.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 44.1% are under the age of 18 and 19.8% are 65 or older.Americus is a city located in Lyon County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 938.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there are 938 people, 355 households, and 259 families residing in the city. The population density is 335.3/km² (870.1/mi²). There are 383 housing units at an average density of 136.9/km² (355.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.80% White, 0.32% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.07% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 1.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 355 households out of which 39.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.9% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.0% are non-families. 23.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.12. In the city the population is spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $35,859, and the median income for a family is $43,850. Males have a median income of $29,545 versus $21,705 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,532. 11.4% of the population and 9.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.0% are under the age of 18 and 11.1% are 65 or older.
