Group of cells of the conduction system of the heart which is situated just beneath the right atrial endocardium directly above the insertion of the septal leaflet of the tricuspid valve and just anterior to the ostium of the coronary sinus. One AV nodal function is transmission of atrial signals to the ventricles, another is a delay of approximately 0. 04 seconds in AV transmission which occurs at or near the atrionodal junction.
